IMPORTANT!
THE FUTURE OF BIRMINGHAM WHEELS IS UNDER THREAT!
Birmingham City Council are producing a plan [The Bordesley Park Area Action Plan] which covers the area around Birmingham Wheels Raceway.
In an issues and options report four options for the Birmingham Wheels site have been identified and of these two or possibly three of these could result in demolition of the raceway.
Incarace Ltd have submitted a response to the consultation and now wish to back this up with a petition open to all the users of the raceway.
It is our intention to have this available for signature at ALL Birmingham Wheels meeting up to and including the Champion of Champions event.
We would ask that everyone coming to these events take the time to sign the petition. It is our belief that Birmingham City Council seriously underestimates the importance of the facility and it important we let them know how much it is valued.
We intend to put the petition online in due course but initially we think it is important to get the paper, on-site petition underway first.
The wording of the petition will be as follows:
"We, the undersigned, call on Birmingham City Council to:
1. Recognise the importance of Birmingham Wheels Raceway both as a sports venue in Birmingham and also to the sport of short oval racing acknowledging the Raceway meets proven need and demand for local, regional and nationaly significant motorsport and provides an important venue for regular spectator events attracting large crowds.
2. Recognise the Raceway provides - alongside other uses at Wheels - important adventure activities and experiences which are particularly attractive to younger people including those from disadvantaged communities.
3. Recognise that the provision of the Raceway as a motorsport venue is a key component supporting economic activity in the automotive industry reflecting the skills and heritage of Birmingham in this sector.
4. Pro-actively support and plan for the improvement of Birmingham Wheels Raceway as part of the Bordesley Park Area Action Plan and to reject options that would involve demolition of the Raceway.
5. Recognise that in the event that the Raceway is to be demolished then an alternative facility of at least equal quality should be fully funded, constructed and operational elsewhere within the boundary of the City of Birmingham before activities at the existing facility are allowed to cease."
We would encourage everyone to read the background documentation which is available online at link address below.
Anyone wishing to make substantive comments can do so until 31 October 2011. The document already submitted by Incarace Ltd can be downloaded below.
Finally, this is an opportunity to help save racing at one of UK oval racing's best-loved tracks. Please help spread the word across the whole of the oval racing fraternity!
