The traditional first title of the BriSCA F2 season is now the Birmingham Speedweeks, held every March at Birmingham since 2008. But just what is this championship all about?
BriSCA F2 is well known as one of the premier formulas at the Bordesley Green track, with drivers travelling from all over the country to compete. The Central League is of course well established as the venue’s leading title race at the end of the season, but four years ago Incarace thought...how can we reward the drivers further for their efforts?
The answer came when Wheels was handed F2 fixtures for every Saturday in March 2008, and the deal was struck that points from each round would count towards a special race at the last meeting of the month. Sadly that final meeting of March ’08 was ruined by heavy rain, but that did not detract from a fine drive by 101 Kelvyn Whalley who splashed his way to the inaugural title.
Twelve months later there was a surprise in store as returnee 10 Stuart Fletcher led all the way from white grade to take the biggest win of his career, while over the last two seasons the series has been dominated by 445 Nigel Green and 886 Chris Bradbury. Last year the latter took the inaugural Shootout series and the Central League crown while Green secured the track championship, and these two will be the favourites once again but with several new drivers and new cars set to hit the track, maybe their dominance will be threatened.
