Foxhall Stadium Meeting Preview 1st May 2010 - Added 28/4/10

It’s a big day for the Ipswich Banger Track Championship on Saturday 6.45 start time as the yearlong series reaches round 4. This one of two special rounds which sees a prize and £100 cash bonus paid to the current leader in the series by sponsor Peter Brown Developments, who have this year put up a prize fund of £1300. Current leader who looks likely to stay on top after this round is Martlesham garage owner Simon Berry who has nearly double the points of his closest rival. Mathematically Berry could be knocked off the top but in reality it looks unlikely. As usual there is a strong local entry for this championship Paul Felgate (Framlingham) hold fifth place in the points and will be looking to break into the top three. The popular Ipswich based Team Simple will be out in force this time although many of them are not as well placed in the points as they would like, but with drivers like Sean Parratt and Jason Thurlow enjoying a good crash as much as a race is hardly a surprise, expect some lively action from these two and their counterparts as they take on the opposition. Claydon pairing of Darren and Craig Yates are booked into race and both will be looking for a haul of points with Darren to close to the bottom of the points for his liking. Great Yarmouth regulars Jonny Wilkinson and Kieron Cannell will be making the journey down the A12 and can always be sure to be mixed up the action whenever they visit Foxhall. It will be a busy weekend for the Norfolk pair as they will be out again the following evening at Yarmouth Stadium. Steen Rozier (Harwich) will be racing, Rozier always takes a lot of time over preparing his cars and fully desreves his sixth spot in the points chart.

Stock Rods make up the non contact part of this three formula meeting as they race in a round of the Polleysport Yokohama Tyre series with sponsorship from Ovenden Plant Hire. The two big names in the south of England Andy Sturt and Stuart Smyth will be out to do battle, and often these tweo go away with the lions haul of the points. Coming down from Crewe in an attempt to stop them having it all their own way is World Champion Stuart Fox hoping for better luck than his last East Anglian trip when he clashed spectacularly with Mark Shinn at Great Yarmouth. A Bank Holiday weekend will often bring some of the longer distance travellers and this meeting will see four drivers making the journey south from Scotland. Stock Rods are a very strong class north of the border and Robert McDonald, Kerr Patterson, along with Jonathan and Tony Lattka will be welcome additions at the wide fast Foxhall oval. Local eyes will be on Shaun Taylor ant Steve Abbott who both race Vauxhall Novas, a car widely used in this formula due to its supply of parts and ease of maintenance. Woodbridge racer Paul Frost will be racing his Vauxhall Tigra which had its race debut at Yarmouth last month, while not a sparkling debut, Frost is well capable of sorting the new car and it wit will be interesting to see how it performs at Ipswich. We mentioned Simon Berry before when previewing the Bangers, well he is in for a busy night as he races his new Renault Clio Stock Rod as well as trying to hold on to his lead in the Ipswich Banger Championship.

The heavy hitters are in town as the Historic Stock Cars make their second visit of the year to Foxhall to remind us “how it used to be.” This class is dominated now by the Triumph 2000, which whilst a few did race back in the 70's and early 80's they never really dominated the formula as they appear to now. One thing is for sure though a well prepared Triumph is the tool for the job which has led to the domination we see today. A few drivers still stick with some of the older machines, living just a stone’s throw from the stadium in Kesgrave Nick Dellar is racing his Bob Studd replica, carrying the once feared 499 number his MG Magnette really sums up what this formula was created for, a real reminder of days long gone.
