2007 Fixtures

With the release of the Fixtures, we have received a number of phone calls off drivers questioning them. What we must stress, is that these are only provisional Fixtures which have been made available for the NEC show. All Fixtures are subject to change and some alterations will be made in readiness for the Official Fixtures Booklet in March. The dates of the Fixtures as far as we know are 100% set so if you are planning holidays etc. these should give you a guide as to when you book up. Fixtures are also available on the Raceway's Page (to check on what's on at each track in 2007) and also on the Formula's Page (to check on what meetings that particular Formula are racing at). Provisional Booking Lists will also be available on the Race Dates Page, click on the date to find out who has booked in!

Swaffham Raceway

It is with huge disappointment that we have to announce that Spedeworth Motorsports will not be operating from Swaffham Raceway in 2007.

The decision to pull out will probably not come as a big surprise to those of you who have been regular visitors at Swaffham over the last few years, as despite our best efforts attracting a crowd to the stadium has proven much hard than ever anticipated.

It’s a huge shame to loose this track from the EA group, as it has become a firm favourite with many of our drivers, and in all honesty we don’t often struggle for cars.

It was a huge investment to bring the track up to an acceptable working standard, following many years of decay, and perhaps with further investment the stadium would attract more spectators, but unfortunately as we have sustained such heavy losses over the last few years, we are not in a position to make the further huge investments that would no doubt be needed to bring the track up to the kind of standards that might bring about a significant change, and sadly neither is the stadium owner at this time.

In addition to the frustrations we have endured with regard to the stock car racing, again as many Swaffham visitors will have noticed, the dog track has been put back in place, and the stadium owners are now insisting on carrying out plans with regard to the re-launch of the dog racing at Swaffham, which we anticipate will bring about operational difficulties if we were to stay.

On balance, all we can say is that we gave it our best shot, we have had some fantastic race meetings at Swaffham, a few big titles won and lost; and those who attended them will not easily forget some of our brilliant parties.  For now the curtain closes on Swaffham.  At this time we do not know if any other promoter will take up the challenge to turn Swaffham around, and we say good luck to them if they want to try.

For 2007, the closure of Swaffham will mean that our staff and drivers will have more opportunity to concentrate efforts on Foxhall and Yarmouth, two of the best tracks in the country without question.  Foxhall stands worlds apart from any other Oval Track, steeped in history and undoubtedly the home of Hot Rod Racing, but notably also a track where history is remade every season by every formula that we promote, from Superstox to Rookie Rods, this track never fails to deliver.  Also, with the wonderful refurbishments that have recently been completed at Yarmouth, we can see a bright future for this stadium, fantastic facilities and a fast tight track perfect for our kind of racing, and always so well managed it’s a pleasure to operate.

Finally, although we are saying a sad goodbye to Swaffham, we still feel we have plenty to look forward to in 2007, we are disappointed, but not beaten, and the Spedeworth Motorsport expansion plans for the future will soon be put back on track.  With property developers moving in on every spare green patch in the UK, Oval Racing and other similar sports are all getting squeezed harder and harder, but we are determined to keep Oval Racing alive and kicking in the UK, so keep the faith!

Terry Coke - Latest News

Terry was moved to Oxford hospital yesterday, and should have his operation today.  I understand it is a long and complex operation, up to 3 hours.  He has smashed his pelvic bone, damaged the ball joint on the top of his leg, and broken two ribs, but still managed to get himself out of the car on the day - amazing!
He has been stuck in Ipswich hospital for two weeks, with no proper treatment, only pain relief, whilst Ipswich Hospital administration claimed they were waiting for a bed at Oxford, and whilst they also claimed that Oxford were unable to schedule his operation.  It transpired on Wednesday, when Terry's wife rang the surgeon herself at Oxford hospital, that in fact neither hospital had contacted the surgeon to try and schedule his operation.  In fact, both hospitals were refusing to fund the operation, and this is why Terry was laid immobile, uncomfortable, in a somewhat humiliating condition as he was unable to sit up or move at all, and therefore everything had to be done for him, and was also in some pain, for two weeks.
Ipswich refused to pay for the operation as Terry is not resident in Suffolk - despite the fact he was competing for a charity event to benefit local charities!  Oxford refused to pay for it as the incident did not happen in Oxfordshire.  Terry lives in Berkshire, but his local hospital is not equipped to perform the operation.
The upshot was that both Oxford and Ipswich hospitals said that they would not be able to fund the operation for another 5-6 weeks, and so Terry was looking at the prospect of laying flat on his back for all this time, and for no real good reason.
His wife spoke to the surgeon and asked if the operation could be done privately.  The surgeon said that he was available (not what the other hospitals had said) and that he could perform the operation immediately, but that it was going to cost them £10,000. 
In desperation, Terry and his wife have borrowed the money from Terry's employers.  The money was paid yesterday, and as said earlier, the operation should be carried out today, and if all goes well, Terry will be allowed home next week, in time for Xmas. 
I think this is a totally disgusting situation.  I have tried to get the local media on this, but with all the other horrors in Suffolk at the moment, there is nothing else getting in the news, but we will keep trying.  We will also see if we can start up a fund at Spedeworth for people to make donations, to help Terry and his wife pay back his boss.  Any ideas or suggestions would be gratefully received.

The following statement has been issued by the Oval Racing Council with immediate effect:
Following assurances given by John Slack with regard to Ringwood Raceway, and future cooperation with the ORC, at the Oval Racing Council meeting of 20 November, these assurances have not been kept. Hence, Ringwood Raceway does not hold a current membership of the ORC. Drivers from all ORC promotions are advised they should not race at Ringwood, and those drivers that continue to do so, would be likely to not get bookings at other ORC venues in future. Drivers are therefore encouraged to check with their own promotion. The situation is constantly under review.

Terry Coke - Update

Sadly Terry remains in traction at the Ipswich Hospital as a bed hasn't become available in Oxford yet. Worse news at present is that he is unlikely to be operated on for 5 to 6 weeks as the damage is worse than what was first thought and can only be done by 2 surgeons in this country. He's still on Martlesham Ward (details Here or the telephone number 01473 702290). Terry also has a direct telephone contact number and this can be obtained by phoning the Hospital switchboard on 01473 712233 then asking for the patientline service and then asking for Terry Coke on the Martlesham Ward. As you can imagine Terry would very much appreciate visitors and contact with the outside world as being flat on his back all day unable to move is very frustrating for him.

A current crime spree in the Yarmouth area has seen a number of transporters stolen. Whilst these thieves may not be targeting the Stock Car fraternity as such it may pay to be extra vigilant at this time.

Terry Coke - Update

Terry is still in traction at Ipswich Hospital whilst waiting for a bed to become available in Oxford where he is due to be operated on next week. He's likely to be in Ipswich for another 2 or 3 days and is on the Martlesham Ward for anyone who would like to pay him a visit; I'm sure he'd appreciate the company as he's unable to move anywhere at the moment!

Terry Coke

As you may be aware V8 Stock Car driver Terry Coke was injured racing at the Charity Banger Allstars meeting at Foxhall Stadium Sunday. Terry was accidentally hit in the drivers door of the MGB car he was driving and sustained a shattered pelvis and 2 broken ribs. He is currently in traction at the Ipswich Hospital and at present is waiting on an operation to repair the damage which may be a 7 or 8 day wait. He may also be transferred to a Hospital closer to his home to have the operation. Everyone at Spedeworth wishes Terry a swift recovery and we shall update you on any news as we receive it.

Spedeworth National Banger Success

Congratulations to 741 Luke Parfitt on winning the coveted Champion of Champions title at Birmingham Wheels Raceway. Luke, racing a Mk 3 Cavalier, battled against the UK's top drivers to come out on top ahead of 2005 World Champion Shane Davies. Well done Luke!

Allstar Charity Banger Racing - Drivers Wanted!

With this Charity meeting at Foxhall Stadium fast approaching on Sunday 3rd December (1pm start) we are still looking for a few drivers to fill in the blanks! We currently have 7 drivers places to fill, these being 2x (or 3) V8 Stock Cars for the V8 Teams, 2x National Bangers and 3 from any other formula for the Bits & Bobs Team. Ringwood Raceway

Following the various rumours circulating regarding the future of Ringwood Raceway, Spedeworth can now confirm that unfortunately we will definitely not be running racing there anymore.
All I can do is apologise to everybody. I have done my best there and I think everyone was in agreement that racing there had improved since we started running things, but it has just not worked out.
I am sorry to all the drivers, especially our regular ones, but anyone who races at Ringwood will incur an ORC ban. Thank you to everyone for your support.

Cheetah devours the field.
Jason Carnwell’s Cheetah  is a fickle feline; when it is on form it is absolutely awesome but then it can go so far the other way it fails to score at all. This is how it was for the British Championship event at Swaffham on 22nd July. New tyres and daring driving of some brilliant (if costly) technology combined to give Carnwell very convincing wins in both the British Championship and first supporting heat – the third race however on a wet track and ineffective tyres saw him lapped at least twice. 

The British Championship drama started in the warm up laps as Jonathan Pooley’s suspension collapsed bringing him to a halt in turn 3. Once the stricken car was removed the grid lined up with qualifiers in graded order. Carnwell started 2 cars ahead of his main rival, 3 times European Champion, Alan Buckland and World Champion Rob Sayell started off the back of the grid as a non qualifier.

Where Carnwell had started would however have been totally irrelevant as he proceeded to streak past the 11 cars ahead often three abreast around the outside on the dust seemingly unusable to everyone else. Early leader Barry Goldsby was overtaken round the outside of turn 4 on entering lap 4 by Neil Clarke, who was still using the 2005 car but his lead was short lived as Carnwell stormed past him to take up the lead on lap 7.  By lap 12 Clarke was half a lap adrift and Carnwell was already lapping into the back of the field. Buckland had come through to third by this time, clearing a pack of evenly matched cars including Goldsby, Gavin Terry, Cliff Bunn, Dave Smith, defending champion Gary Bonner, Steve Terry and trailing at the back of this pack in tenth was Sayell. Lap 14 saw Buckland up to second but two thirds of a lap adrift from the disappearing Cheetah, Sayell had overtaken 4 cars around the outside of turn 4 to move up to 6th and once free of the pack was making up ground rapidly.  Even more rapid was Carnwell who having lapped the rest of the field lapped Sayell as he moved into 4th and lapped third place Clarke a lap later.  A clearly delighted Carnwell took the flag with second placed Buckland in his sights; Clarke crossed the line fractionally ahead of Sayell.  Goldsby then headed the pack of closely bunched cars which crossed the line in quick succession including Gavin Terry, Smith, Bonner, Steve Terry and the Bunn brothers Geoff & Cliff and Gary Granger albeit all a lap down on the leader.

Team Cheetah could not be more pleased with the result whilst runner up Buckland was philosophical, “I enjoyed the race but just waved goodbye to the Cheetah – on those tyres I simply could not live with it”. 

The first support race saw all 18 cars on grid in graded order with Buckland and Sayell at the back. Barry Goldsby led the race away and looked at one time likely to win still heading the field at half distance. But the Cheetah was again on the prowl around the outside and this is how he demoted Goldsby going into lap 12. Once out front Carnwell was soon disappearing into the distance and had lapped three cars at the back of the field before taking his second win of the day. Clarke made a daring moved to take second from Goldsby with two laps to go, Smith was 4th ahead of Gary Granger, Buckland, Geoff Bunn and G Pooley.

It rained before the third race with most cars going onto wets, the Cheetah included.  As Goldsby again lead the field away Gavin Terry’s Fireball was close behind. By lap 2 it was clear the Carnwell was in trouble. Lap 3 saw Terry Junior take the lead and lap 4 saw Carnwell  lapped by the leader plus second and third Goldsby and Clarke. From here on in Carnwell ran the outside line at a snail’s pace and a bemused field proceeded to pass him at regular intervals. Clarke over took Goldsby on lap 5 but despite some fierce pressure Gavin Terry ran a perfect race all the way to the flag for his first win this season and in the Fireball. Clarke was second and Jonathan Pooley finished third ahead of Martin Lamb, Buckland, Sayell, G Bunn and Goldsby.  Afterwards Carnwell attributed his problems to the wets he had bought which were “useless” and a grinning Gavin Terry commented that the race felt ten times longer when leading.

Transponders/MyLaps.com

There have been many requests asking for why the Transponder results from the East Anglian tracks have not yet been added to the www.mylaps.com website. To put everybody in the picture we have hit a few glitches in some of the results and have been working on this problem so that we do have accurate results/lap times uploaded to the site. We are now hoping to have everything in place for Ipswich Spedeweekend as our final testing will be made at the previous weeks Press Day at Ipswich. The Yarmouth results will be a bit further down the line as the ongoing building work at Yarmouth Stadium has meant that we are currently using a temporary Race Control box which hasn't got a cable from the track going to it. We are currently investigating the possibility of running a temporary cable to the box in the short term otherwise it could be until the developments have finished at the Stadium.

(The) Pooleys’ Patch

After 4 meetings of despair and a serious consideration to scrap his new car, it all came good for Jonathan Pooley at Yarmouth on May 28th before a huge holiday crowd winning all three races including an equally huge trophy in the Derek Kisby Memorial final. It is a trophy Jonathan’s dad has won before and Gordon Pooley would have liked to win it back but he had to be content with three runner up places instead, the father and son duo claiming a patch of Yarmouth for the Pooley team.  Rob Sayell took third place in both the heats and Alan Buckland third in a very close run final.

Gordon Pooley lead away heat one from the front row beating Cliff Bunn with Jonathan in third. Lap six saw Jonathan overtake Bunn on the outside line before chasing after his errant father who had made the most of the clear run to pull out approximately a third of a lap. Further down the field Gary Granger headed up a train of cars with Sayell ahead of Buckland, Jason Carnwell and Steve Terry and Neil Clarke who had started off the back whilst trying out his new car. Lap 9 saw Jonathan pass his dad on the inside of the pit corner with relative ease and rapidly pull away as Pooley Senior and Bunn came under immense pressure from Granger, Sayell and Buckland none of whom were unable to get past the Vauxhall. Sayell finally passed Granger with three laps to go  but despite repeated attempts on both the inside and outside of Gordon Pooley, could not find a way past having to settle for third. Buckland passed Bunn on the outside line on the penultimate lap for fourth with Carnwell further demoting Bunn on the final lap for fifth.

Between heats Neil Clarke pronounced himself happy with the new car moving forward on the grid for heat two and Alan Buckland discovered a split radiator which he managed to make a running repair to only just making the grid.

Heat two saw a repeat of heat one with Gordon Pooley leading the race away and Jonathan Pooley again overtaking his father on the inside of the pit bend if anything with even more ease. Once out front last year’s Best Newcomer disappeared into the distance whilst the rest of the field tackled his father. Sayell and Buckland caught Gordon on lap 9 but despite the best efforts of them both neither could find a way past. When the flag dropped after 14 laps there was nothing between them; Gordon holding second, Sayell third and Buckland a very close 4th. Cliff Bunn went one better than the previous race for fifth with Steve Terry having a good race finishing a close 6th.

Prior to the final Gordon Pooley laid claim to the impressive Kisby trophy but it was not to be. The race ran very much the same course as the heats the only exception being that Jonathan took 9 laps to catch his father and when he did simply powered round the outside and off into the sunset. Rob Sayell and Alan Buckland spent the remaining half of the race attempting to pass Gordon Pooley almost tripping over each other in the attempt and swapping places several times as they attempted both inside and outside lines. On lap 15 Sayell was third, lap 16 Buckland ahead and as they crossed the line on lap 17 Sayell was ahead again. But lap 18 saw another attempt by Sayell to go round the outside of the number 33 car; the back of Gordon’s car clipped Sayell’s car flicking him upwards – this lost Sayell valuable momentum and gave Buckland his chance as he moved ahead again. As so often happens at Yarmouth the fight for second went right down to the flag with Pooley Senior, Buckland, Sayell and Terry all crossing the line en bloc, with Carnwell and Bunn only feet behind.

Paul Kisby and family had made their annual trip to present their father’s memorial trophy and were pleased to see familiar faces amongst the winners.
Jonathan was delighted with his hat trick and the change in his car’s performance. “I was all ready to cut it up if it was no better tonight” he said. Papa Pooley, the team’s chief designer and car builder was equally pleased with the improvements and the new engine “It took just one phone call to resolve the problems in the end and it will only get quicker from here” he commented.

The hat trick awarded Jonathan with an automatic upgrade to star status and a jump from 9th to 5th place in the AWS Series. Gordon has also jumped 4 places from 12th to 8th overall and an upgrade to blue grade for the coming meeting at Northampton on 4th June where the Cliff Davis Cup will be up for grabs. Anne Sayell
